About Learning Arts at Home:
Learning Arts at Home (LAH) was created during the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic (March, 2020) to provide a means of digital storytelling pertaining to art education and art making to serve children and families in the Paterson Public Schools (PPS) in New Jersey.

Learning Arts at Home’s design draws upon the theoretical lens of Gay (2002)’s culturally responsive teaching (CRT). He defined culturally responsive teaching as "using the cultural characteristics, experiences, and perspectives of ethnically diverse students as conduits for teaching them more effectively” (2002, p. 106). This notion is based on the assumption that when academic knowledge and skills are situated within the lived experiences and students' frames of reference, they are more personally meaningful, have higher interest appeal, and are learned more easily and thoroughly.

The goals of LAH are as follows:

(1) provide students with culturally responsive digital storytelling and art creation
(2) support teachers to use the videos with their students as teaching tools
(3) use arts integration as a means to teach content areas, especially literacy and social studies
(4) provide bilingual classes and families with virtual access to art related videos
(5) facilitate mental health via social connections and the arts for students and families during the pandemic.
